Programming for Health Care

Health Care Data and SAS

(by Craig Dickstein, Alan Wilson, Marge Scerbo)

"From birth certificate until death certificate, a person accumulates health care data..."

Finally! A book that draws together tried and true techniques for using SAS to work with health care data. New and experienced SAS programmers and analysts working in health care data analysis will find this book invaluable in their daily professional life. Health care data can be diverse and complicated. With this book you will learn how to use SAS to access the information within the data. A terrific primer for new health care analysts and a reference for long-time practitioners, this book defines the types of health care data and explores a wide range of tasks, including reading health care data, validating health care data, manipulating the data, and producing reports. The combination of basic information and tricks of the trade make this a "must-have" book for health care programmers and analysts.

Supports releases 6.11 and higher of SAS software.

Survival Analysis Using SAS: A Practical Guide

(by Paul Allison)

"Survival analysis was designed for longitudinal data on the occurrence of events..."

Written to presume only a basic knowledge of regression analysis and linear models, this is marvelously fluent and presents the survival-analysis material in an enjoyable and readable style. Some of the indigenous topics-such as competing risks, repeated events, multiple events, and event history-receive more emphasis in this book than in most other survival-analysis books. The book incidentally does a nice job of explaining the features in SAS that differentiate SAS survival-analysis capabilities from the capabilities of other (unnamed) survival-analysis software.

The book has been revised to include concepts of the Output Delivery System; the STYLE= option in the PRINT, REPORT, and TABULATE procedures; ODS HTML, RTF, PRINTER, and OUTPUT destinations; PROC REPORT; more on PROC TABULATE; exporting data; and the colon modifier for informats. You'll find clear and concise explanations of basic SAS concepts (such as DATA and PROC steps), inputting data, modifying and combining data sets, summarizing and presenting data, basic statistical procedures, and debugging SAS programs. SAS Programming in the Pharmaceutical Industry

(by Jack Shostak

"Like many industries, the pharmaceutical industry has a vocabulary and language all its own..."

Very hands-on and comprehensive! Both the novice and the advanced user will find valuable tips and techniques in this well-written text on SAS Programming in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Important topics such as CDISC, MedDRA, WHODrug, and SOPs are clearly presented with the SAS user in mind. The text is a virtual treasure chest of many delightful examples, ranging from performing many-to-many comparisons/joins and creating box-and-whisker plots, to using the SQL Pass-Through Facility to read Microsoft Excel data.

Carpenter's Complete Guide to the SAS Macro Language, 2nd Edition

(by Art Carpenter)

Art has once again written a fantastic SAS book. It is very complete in its coverage of the macro language, covering everything from the basics to advanced topics. It makes an excellent reference book with its clear layout. I would highly recommend it particularly to experienced SAS programmers who want a complete macro reference which extends to cover advanced topics. I wrote the "Advanced Macro Programming" course for SAS UK, and this would make a perfect companion to that course. In short, it's a fantastic book and contains plenty of new material compared to his first. It will surely pay for itself in no time.
